Marven of the Great North Woods

Good morning 4th graders.  For the next two weeks, we will be reading the story "Marven of the Great North Woods" about a young boy - only 10 years old - who goes to live on a lumberjack camp in order to escape a flu epidemic that could make him sick.

Watch the video below about lumberjack camps from the 1940s.   This video shows lumberjacks working in California.  In the story we will read, the lumberjacks work in Northern Minnesota, a different (and much snowier place!)

After that, please visit Spelling City to practice this week's words.  Choose the list that is right for you!

Martin Luther King, Jr.

How many of you have heard of Martin Luther King, Jr?  Do you know why he is a famous person in American history?

He is known for his courage, bravery and his dream.

What is Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream?

You can listen to part of his famous "I Have a Dream" Speech below. The speech was given in 1963, so the video footage is old!
